Applying Service Pack to the Active Node

After installation of SQL 2005 Server in the clustered environment, you will need to apply any service packs. This will be done first to the SQL Server on the ACTIVE NODE, and then applied to the Client & and WorkStation utilities on each of the other nodes.

  1. To begin you will need to copy the Service Pack files to place where they can be accessed by all nodes.
    This can be done by:
    1. Copying the service pack files to a local drive/directory on each node (Prefered method)
    2. Mapping a drive to a network share that contains the service pack files
It is preferred taht you copy them to a local drive/directory on each node.
  2. Once you have copied the files to each of the nodes, login to the Currently Active Node using the account that the SQL Server Service runs under.
While it is permissible to use any account that has administrator priviledges of the node, it is preferred that you use the account that the SQL Server Service runs under.
    1. Click on Start->Run->Browse and browse to the directory where you have placed the Service Pack executable.
    2. Select the Service Pack executable
    3. Click on the [Open] button
    4. Click [OK] to execute the program
  3. The program will begin by extracting its files to a temporary directory, and then search for installed instances of SQL Server Once it finds and installed instance, it will display the "Welcome" screen.
To continue, click on the [Next] button.
  4. The program will then present the License Terms screen
Accept the terms and click on the [Next] button to continue.
  5. The program will then scan the system and present you with the Feature Selection screen. Verify that features you wish to upgrade.
Click on the [Next] button to continue.
  6. The program will then present you with the Authentication screen. Verify that the selected instances and authentication mode to be used for the upgrade.
Click on the [Next] button to continue
  7. In the Remote User Accout screen enter the credentials for the account that will be use to access the remote nodes of the cluster. This will most likely be the same account that you logged in with (the MS SQL Service account).
Enter the appropriate information and click on the [Next] button to continue.
  8. On the Error and Usage Report Settings screen, select whether or not you wish to send information to Microsoft.
Click on the [Next] button to continue.
  9. The program will now check to see if any running processes are locking affected files. If any such processes are detected, you will need to reboot the node after the service pack has been applied.
Click on the [Next] button to continue.
  10. The program will now verify the information you have supplied inform you that it is ready to install the service pack.
Click on the [Next] button to continue.
  11. The program will now begin the installation of the Service Pack. During the process it will display its progress as products and components are affected. The program will notify you when the installation is complete and warn you if a reboot will be required.
Click on the [OK] button to continue.
Click on the [Next] button to continue.
  12. At the end you will be presented with a summary of the installation. Scroll through the list to check for any problems. If any problems were detected, record the location of the installation log for later review.
Click on the [Next] button to continue.
  13. The final screen will be the "Additional Information" screen. You will notice the checkbox for the "User Provisioning Tool for Widows Vista" is already checked. If this installation resides on a Windows Vista or Server 2008 system, you will need to run the Provisioning tool. If not, you may uncheck the box to bypass it.
Click on the [Finish] button to complete the operation.
  14. As stated in the earlier warning screen, you will now need to restart the node in order for the changes to take affect.
    1. Click on Start->Shutdown
    2. Select Restart from the options
    3. Enter "SQL 2005 Service Pack 2" in the Comment box
    4. Click on the [OK] button to complete the operation.
The node will shutdowon and restart causing the cluster to automatically fail-over to one of the backup nodes. (This is a GOOD thing!)
After you have completed applied the Service Pack, you will need to Update the Books-Online program on each of the nodes.
